Governor's Notes

My Dream Team,
What do you see in this photo?
Our International President Barry Rassin and his wife Ester?  Yes.
Flamingoes?  Yes.
What about that flock of flamingoes?
Specifically, what is different about one of them?
That second one from the left is going his or her own direction—creating a new path rather than following the crowd.
Throughout our Rotary year of Be the Inspiration, I have seen that flamingo in a lot of you!  You were willing to challenge the status quo as you tried new things this past year.
Did every idea you tried end in incredible success?  Probably not.  Certainly not for me personally.  However, I take great pride in the way we have dared greatly together.
Many of our clubs have taken the membership challenge to heart and are changing things up to attract new members.
  • Ebensburg and Johnstown sponsored new Rotaract clubs this year.
  • Youth program participation including Interact and RYLA is on the uptick.  Our Interactors embrace boldness in their actions.
If you miss the recap at District Conference, you missed a real opportunity to be inspired about our young people and our future.  Eighteen clubs (and it’s not too late to act) supported the international Solar Suitcase Project raising over $45,000 to fully fund 16 suitcases.  An additional $6,000 was contributed by Interact Clubs.
We recognized Carol and Chuck (posthumously) Keller as Arch Klumpf Society members, which acknowledges TRF giving in excess of $250,000.  What an example they have set for the rest of us.

Your projects have been incredible—parks, boots, coats, flags, medical supplies, food, Christmas wishes, and so many others that directly make our communities better places to live.
You are People of Action!
Our time together is not over yet, but I wanted to extend my sincere appreciation for how very much you have inspired me throughout this past year.

We have just over a month left in this Rotary year and I urge you to work on the Presidential Citation and get the information entered into Rotary Club Central.  Your clubs have worked hard and you deserve a little recognition.

My friends, continue to be THAT flamingo, who has the confidence to go in his or her own direction blazing new paths.

News to Know

Last Best District Conference Ever was an incredible success!  Check out the photos (courtesy of Jeff Helsel) at https://photos.app.goo.gl/FSdWH4zXjCusKAEU7

District Conference Chairs Colleen and George Wood outdid themselves and truly made the event the last BEST District Conference Ever! (Yes, I might be a little biased, but look at all those smiling faces!)

My sincere thanks to all who served on the District Conference Committee and to those who attended.

Our Presidential Representative Mike Adkins and his wife Vicki were absolutely refreshing and I hope each of you who attended had a chance to talk with them. Our luncheon speaker Brigadier General David Papak delivered an engaging message on Character Does Matter, which is one of the tenants of the Travis Manion Foundation.  My daughter Kimberly used olives as an analogy for Comfort and Growth Do Not Coexist.  In addition to our speakers and awards, if you missed the conference, you also missed an elephant, flying monkeys, sombreros, dancing, and a whole lot of fun and laughter.
Rotarians sure know how to have a good time!

CHARACTER DOES MATTER

Doing the right thing
Character Does Matter Mentors develop character and leadership skills in young adults. Grounded in the evidence-based field of Positive Psychology, they use a strengths-based approach to develop character traits in the next generation through a combination of informal discussions and activity-based learning. www.travismanion.org
