Oh what a beautiful morning, oh what a beautiful day,
I have a wonderful feeling, everything is going my way!
“When you focus on seeing the positive side of life all sorts of opportunities begin to reveal themselves” — Josh S. Hinds

Governor's Note

Rotarian Friends,
This past week, I have been thinking a lot about how different people view the world.  Deep stuff, huh?  Or maybe the simplest thing of all.
Think of some binoculars. Which side are you on?  Are you looking out or are you focused on yourself?
Self-reflection is good, but as Narcissus found out too much can lead to despair.
What comes back to me over and over again, is that most Rotarians see the world with an outward view.  We see challenges and seek to find solutions. We see need and seek to fill it. We see suffering and seek to provide comfort.
The six areas of focus all look outward:
·      Peace and conflict prevention/resolution.
·      Disease prevention and treatment.
·      Water and sanitation.
·      Maternal and child health.
·      Basic education and literacy.
·      Economic and community development
Going back to the deep or obvious thinking, when we look outward, who benefits?
In  1911, the second Rotary convention, in Portland, Oregon, USA, approved "He Profits Most Who Serves Best" as the Rotary motto.
At the 1950 Rotary International Convention in Detroit, Michigan, USA, two slogans were formally approved as the official mottoes of Rotary: He Profits Most Who Serves Best and Service Above Self.
The 1989 Council on Legislation established "Service Above Self" as the principal motto of Rotary because it best conveys the philosophy of unselfish volunteer service.
He Profits Most Who Serves Best was modified to They Profit Most Who Serve Best in 2004 and to its current wording, One Profits Most Who Serves Best, in 2010.
