Governor's Notes

Rotary Friends,
We are in our ninth month of this Rotary year!  Do you also have that feeling that time is accelerating?
All but one of my club visits have been completed and now District Conference planning is in full swing.
Many clubs are hosting spring fundraisers—elimination dinners, night at the races, and trivia contests—just to name a few.
Lots of planning goes into making these events successful and fun and I commend you for your efforts.
These are also opportunities to share Rotary with people who don’t know about the impact we have on our communities and the world.
As I see the daffodils popping up, I think about my personal, professional, and Rotarian growth.  We are works in progress and growth is what helps us to press on.
Are you also challenging yourself to learn new things and to touch the lives of others?  I know many of you, like me, get so involved in so many things that we need to step back on occasion to gain perspective.
Rotary is a part of our lives that truly can improve our mind, bodies, and souls.  By helping others, we enhance our lives.  That truth is what makes me want to share Rotary with friends, colleagues, and associates in the hope that Rotary will also have that boomerang effect on them.

Sharing Rotary

Are you sharing Rotary?
The California Club sure is!
According to the latest RI membership report, California’s membership is up 73.91%!  That is the highest club growth within Districts 7330, 7300, 7280, and 7360, which make up the western half of Pennsylvania.
I have mentioned before that California decided to attract new members by starting a satellite club to take away barriers to entry—meal costs, meeting time, number of meetings per month.
In July, Club President Beth Baxter inducted twelve new members, who have since been joined by eight more.  Last night, Satellite Chair Joe Grodz told me they have five more interested.  Besides reducing entry barriers, membership in California is desirable to a different group.
The newest members are up-and-coming young professionals, many with young families, who want to use their little discretionary time wisely to have a positive impact.  Rotary is a means to make that happen.
For those who think we can’t do that, because our town is too small and there aren’t enough businesses, please note California has two stoplights and the satellite club’s biggest challenge has been to find a meeting location.  From Rotary’s beginning 114 years ago, membership has been by invitation.  Sharing the blessings of Rotary is a gift that costs you nothing, but one that can have far-reaching benefits.
Who do you know who would make a good Rotarian?  Why not invite them to a meeting and start the conversation.
